Bellinis, Bands, and Books

Where was I yesterday?

Well, I have a really hard life. First I went out for drinks, because that’s what I do for a living…

I made my own Bellini at the new Gansevoort Hotel bar, Asellina…

Those are shots of juice, not liquor. Messy, but fun.

Then, being the stud-muffin that I am, I had a date. When it rains it pours. I don’t think I’m doing Chuck Woolery proud (that was a Love Connection reference, please tell me I’m not the only one who watched cheesy 80s dating shoes as kid?), but it’s fun to meet folks and do interesting things: so far this week I’ve gone out for pie, drinks, and music. Err, dating is a wee bit taxing on my diet.

As you all know, I’m trying to broaden my musical horizons, so the concert theme for the evening was quite timely. The opening band was great, but refused to say their name so I have no idea who they are. (Update: I did a bit of Googling and found out they’re called Marfa Lights). Someone needs a good finger-wagging by their manager.

The headlining band was The Airborne Toxic Event. Apparently people with far broader musical horizons than I, know who they are. They were awesome and now I too know who they are. The world makes sense again!

I feel like one of those young and hip people. It’s quite the novelty. But seeing as how I’m a creature of habit I reverted back to my happy place today…coffee shops and a good (e)book.

What can I say, way down deep inside I’m a geeky girl with simple tastes.

The rest of my week is committed to work and friends. I’ve spent a lot of my downtime this week working on my new personal project and doing a ton of research reading. There’s so much superfluous information floating around my head I have an overwhelming urge to call lots of people and share my new found facts, and by urge I mean I’m actually calling people and unloading facts on them. I’m going to try and stop; I think my parents are about ready to block my phone calls. Meantime, there’s work to be done; I start my magazine gig next week and want to have my chapter outline ready to go before I start.

Speaking of Music…

This. Is. Awesome.

Tom Jones and The Cardigans (The Cardigans, you know Love Fool, ‘Romeo and Juliet’, late 90s awesomeness) singing ‘Burning Down the House.’

Wait, was that cool, or did I just prove my own point?

Musical Interlude

Dirty little secret: I have terrible taste in music.

It’s true. I admit it, and I’m more than a little self-conscious about this fact. I listen to current music, and like it, but never really pay attention to artists or the names of songs, which means the only music I have access to on a regular basis is the stuff I was listening to when I was in high school (Oh, Goo Goo Dolls, how far you’ve fallen).

Deep down, I’m pretty sure my fear of music retaliation is the reason I didn’t pursue teaching spin more actively. The few times I did sub classes before I gave up, I spent more money buying “cool music” from iTunes than I was paid to teach, and still proceeded to spend my whole teaching time wondering if the class was secretly judging my musical stylings. You see, the music is the whole reason I go to spin class. Sure it’s great aerobic exercise and does wonders for the height of one’s gluteus maximus, but really I just like being in a dark room with super loud music.

Now that I’m about to embark on recertification (in a month!) I’ve got to overcome my fears of musical mutiny (so, no Stevie Nicks, I guess) and learn a little bit about what the cool kids are listening to these days. Have I ever mentioned that one of the sites I blog for professionally is a radio station? Never trust an expert you can’t see.

I’ve been trying to broaden my musical horizons. Usually this means going to iTunes and blindly buying stuff that’s popular, but there’s also Pandora…unfortunately my channel du jour is the Bobby McFerrin/Don’t Worry Be Happy Channel, and it’s not exactly rocking a hard beat.

In the land of irrational self-esteem issues, I’m less self-conscious about getting up in front of a group of people wearing spandex and having them stare at me for an hour than I am of exposing the inner workings of my iTunes.

If you couldn’t tell, I went to a spin class today. The music: mostly rap, not pop rap, real rap, the kind of rap that makes me feel old and uncool because I’m not sure I can think quickly enough to understand the lyrics. It’s official, I’m still in my 20s, but I’m kind of an old fogey. I need a music makeover stat.

Now, what did I do with that Matchbox20 CD…

This is where it’s really cool if you tell me what bands you rock out to so I can plug them into Pandora and learn things :)

As Hip As I Get

The good news: I’m officially registered to be recertified as a spin instructor on May 21st.

The bad news: I haven’t worked out since Friday. My life, strangely, is feeling a little out of control. This is not the relaxing layoff I had imagined. I actually spent a good portion of yesterday in a meeting regarding some consulting work I’m doing. The rest of the day was spent working, and then I went to meet a friend for dinner and ‘hip’ music.

This is me trying to look hip:

I’m pretty terminally uncool, so I definitely looked long and hard at my closet and decided all the cool kids are wearing glasses and scarves these days.

I actually lucked out; when we arrived at my friend’s social club (I can’t believe social clubs still exist) the hip music was pretty hip circa 1954. Way more my speed than modern cool. We sipped some cocktails, grooved, and I even got digits for a Hasidic Jew and an undergrad. Seriously folks, my life is a sitcom. There has to be a normal guy out there somewhere, right? Not that Hasids and undergrads aren’t normal—I’m just rocking my late 20s and really enjoy wearing pants, short sleeves and my own hair.

Back to fitness, since I’m going to be recertifying to teach spin I was thinking I should probably be taking spin classes. Kind of hard now that I don’t have an active gym membership. I started looking into private spin studios. The cheapest classes I could find were $27 per class. That’s seriously crazy talk! My gym membership was only twice that per month. Perhaps I should reconsider my resolution to not belong to a gym this year. Truthfully though, I’ve really enjoyed working out at home and not feeling guilty about not going to the gym.

Thoughts?

Who knew stationary biking was so ‘spensive. I’m going to see if I can do a workternship somewhere, work a few hours in exchange for free classes.

Curtain Up

Thanks for all of your words of wisdom and advice for my upcoming musical solo.  I TRULY appreciate them.

To clarify, I’ve just been working with some piano vamping and the lyrics; I haven’t had any sheet music or melody lines to work with, so this process has been a bit intimidating for me–but, after hours and hours of singing (everywhere: my house, the subway, walking around New York), I seem to have gotten the swing of the song.  This is good, because we open tonight!

I have to say, I’m seriously impressed with the director, who adapted the piece, wrote all the music, cast and rehearsed the show in a couple of weeks.  I got my song two days ago, and one of the other actors got hers yesterday.  I’m actually kind of amazed at how well the show is turning out.  I think it’s pure adrenaline.

For a recently laid off gal, I’m certainly testing my time management skills.  I’m really enjoying this process, but looking forward to finally feeling a wee bit of that down time.  It’ll be short lived though; I recently took on yet another freelance project that starts up next week.

At least I still get to work in my sweatpants and workout mid-day.  There are definitely perks to self-employment–remind me of that come tax time.

I’m a St. Patrick’s Day failure; I didn’t get to partake in any of the debauchery NYC had to offer in honor of my wee Irish roots (my dad’s mother was Irish).  Perhaps I’ll share a beer with my dad this weekend to celebrate once my show is over.   In addition to green beer, I also had to skip out on my workout due to an early rehearsal, followed by meetings, and class.  Today I’m going to try to get an exercise DVD in before I head back to the theater.

I have to shows tonight!  Wish me luck!

Breakfast

I knew breakfast would be my only balanced meal of the day, so I filled up!
Honeydew melon, 2 slices of Ezekial cinnamon raisin bread with peanut butter and banana

Lunch

Lunch was a whirlwind of bagels and fruit roll-ups. We ate between scenes. I didn’t have time whip out my camera, but let’s just say all the carbs made me super sleepy!

Dinner

Exhausted, and hours of activity still ahead of me, for dinner I decided to hit up Pita Grill for a little treat.

Veggie burger with fontina cheese and salad fixings and way more onions that should be socially acceptable. I don’t think anyone wanted to do scene work with me at my improv class.

Best sweet potato fries I’ve ever had!

If I couldn’t have a green beer, a root beer was a decent substitute.

Can I get a Mulligan?

Just a normal day: woke up, ran 3-miles, went to work, saw Cyndi Lauper in concert, went to running class (another 2-miles), came home ate dinner, blogged.

Oh, wait, did I mention I saw Cyndi Lauper in concert?

New York City is nothing if not the capital of random.  Around 11:30am my co-worker came over to my desk and said that Cyndi Lauper was singing across the street at noon and that we were going.

Cyndi Lauper seemed like way more fun than the spreed sheets I was currently looking at so I agreed.  Let me just say that woman is in amazing shape.  She’s 57 and has a phenominal body, and really great boobs.  I don’t mean to objectify her here, but she was pretty much wearing just a bra under her blazer and it was showing (as it was meant to, I suppose).  The woman has the boobs of a 25 year old!  I was totally impressed.

What I was not impressed with today was my work ethic.  Do ever have those days where you just can’t get your brain to function? Today was definitely one of those days for me, which is actually astronomically not okay as I’m working under a really tight deadline for a new project and have to get a lot of work done very quickly.  I basically spent the majority of my day focusing on logistics because that’s the only useful activity I could muster.  I’m chalking today up as a failure and hoping for a better tomorrow.

Breakfast

Whole wheat English muffin with peanut butter

Lunch

Same lunch as yesterday: grilled turkey breast and vegetable barley soup

Dinner

Brown rice with yellow pepper, zucchini, and shrimp
…and a wee bit of hot sauce for good measure

Guilty pleasures

Guilty pleasure admission time.  I really like Celtic Thunder.

Can’t help it, whenever I see this amalgamation of man-band on TV I get sucked in.  That’s what happened today as I decided to relax a little while I waited for my tofu to bake and rice to boil; I turned on the TV and don’t you know PBS was running a Celtic Thunder special.  They somehow make “I’ll be watching you” less stalkery, more “I’m just gonna keep an eye out on ya, make sure you’re okay.”

Okay, enough of that.  Those cheery Irishmen always make me smile.

Any musical guilty pleasures you’re just dying to get off your chest?

The rest of today wasn’t quite as full of harmonizing men, but it was still good.  I had my third running class.  Ironically, this is the class where I finally started feeling challenged and this was the class where the instructor told me to move up to the more advanced class next week.

Some people like to start hard and push themselves to keep up, when it comes to fitness stuff; I tend to like to start easy and perfect each level on my way to mastery.  I’m always really afraid of injury and/or embarrassment if I can’t keep up.  I’m not sure what I’m going to do next week.  Perhaps I’ll go for a few longer runs over the rest of this week and decide if I think I can handle the harder class.

Breakfast

Smoothie with almond milk, protein powder, banana and mixed berries

AM Snack

Hard boiled egg

Lunch

Salad with lettuce, cucumber, carrots, chick peas, apple, grilled chicken and lemon vinaigrette

PM Snacks

Babybel

Carrots and hummus

Dinner

Stir fry with tofu, onions, broccoli, Trader Joe’s General Tso’s sauce
Brown rice

RIP Mini, Hello Nano

I know my way around a computer fairly well, but at the end of the day I’m not a techie.  I think because I’m tethered to a computer 20-hours a day, I actually want to keep some emotional space from technology once-and-a-while.

I am so not an early adaptor, I’m of the school of “if it ain’t broke, don’t buy a new one”, which is why I have had the same iPod Mini since 2005.  I remember saving all the money I made from my first paid job as an actor and buying an iPod, the same way I saved all my tips from waitressing to buy my first car at 16 (obviously I made more money waiting tables).  Oh, how I’ve loved and cared for that iPod, I even named it—Sam.  Sam, my green little beacon of joy and music.

Sam died.  Well, Sam is in the process of dying.  He just can’t muster up a charge anymore, and sometimes Sam gets too tired to finish out a song.  I’ve decided to let Sam go, as painful as that may be.

So, at lunch, I hit up the Apple store.  I know everyone loves Apple, but I consider it a kind of cult, and am very leery of getting on their bandwagon thankyouverymuch.  (Apple lovers feel free to berate me in the comments, I know it’s coming ;) )Having said that, I spent way too much money there in about half an hour.

First, I researched iPod choices on-line.  I read that a portion of the sales of the red Nano go to an AIDS charity, so I decided to get that one.  At the end of the day, it’s just a color, but if a few bucks of my purchase can go toward helping someone, somewhere, then that seems like the obvious choice, right?  Right.

All I was going to get was the Nano, but then I realized that I needed an arm band for running.  My current one certainly wasn’t going to fit.  Yup, another $30.  Then, I saw something I needed.

I needed it like I needed Gap jeans in the 8th grade, that kind of need.  It’s a chip that you put in your sneaker and measures your mileage, pace, and calories burned while you run and the info is fed into your iPod, and then you can download it and track it on your computer!

This is a lot of technology for a non-techie!  Then, I realized I don’t have the specially designated Nike shoe for this product, but no worries, the magical world of the internets has allowed for me to purchase a little pouch for my shoe laces to carry the magical little sensor (for a whopping $3).  I won’t have the pouch till next week, but once I do, you best be believin’ I’m going to be running everywhere just to play with it.

Disclaimer: Yesterday I posted about the joys of meal planning, today I was a disaster at it.  I woke up completely without appetite so figured I’d listen to my body and skip breakfast.  I had plans to meet a friend for lunch, but he ended up being called into a lunchtime work meeting, so I was on my own for lunch.  For dinner, most went according to plan except that my avocados weren’t good anymore.  Sigh, the best laid plans.

Lunch

Frozen yogurt with strawberries and blackberries

Snack

Banana Nut Bread Larabar (not pictured)

Dinner

Veggie burger, egg, leftover brown rice all doused in hot sauce

2010 The Year of Musical Enlightenment

I am truly a musical spaz.  When people ask “What type of music do you like” as they usually do on dates and awkward social interactions, I get very nervous.  Damn that question.  I don’t know what kind of music I like, how dare you ask me something so personal, can’t I just tell you my social security number, at least I know that.  Usually my answer is “Uhh, I like a little bit of everything.”  That’s right before I shrink back and look for less intrusive people to talk to.

The truth is  I have no idea what’s going on in music. Sometimes I put on Pandora and take notes to look into later on iTunes.  Or I just go straight to the source and buy at random.  I’ve purchased some truly terrible albums for the sake of educating myself.

Yesterday, however, I decided to grow a pair and refresh my exercise playlist.  Rihanna and Britney were getting kind of old. Plus, I can’t listen to Rihanna anymore now without thinking of Chris Brown and that just puts a damper on my stride.

I hit up iTunes to refresh my running playlist and psych myself up to go to the gym this year.  Here’s what I added to the mix:

It really is amazing how motivational music is, now I’m chomping at the bit to hop on a treadmill and test drive my new friends.

I’m always up for suggestions, so if there are any must have ditties I should add to my workout playlist please school me. When people ask me what’s currently on my iPod I’d rather not admit that it’s Bill Withers.

Dinner

My sort-of stir fry cooking.  I like to partially steam the veggies first, and bake the tofu a bit before transferring to the fry pan so I don’t need as much oil.  A little bit of oil at the end to crisp everything up goes a long way.

Tofu Tuesday!

I’m very proud of myself today.  I. Made. Tofu.

I made tofu.  Well, I didn’t make it from fermented soy beans and wait a bajillion years for it to solidify.  I bought it from Trader Joe’s, but I prepared it, and it tasted good!

After my adventure in seitan cooking last week, I decided to give tofu another shot.  Every time that I’ve made it in the past,  it just seemed to have crumbled into a million squishy, tasteless pieces, that I then had to pick around to get to the veggies.  Tonight though, I had a plan.  My idea for tonight started because I’ve been jonesing for Thai food lately.  I do love me some Thai food mightily.  Whenever I go to a Thai restaurant I order a red curry dish, which, much like Lucky Charms, is all sorts of magically delicious.  Unfortunately, it’s cooked in coconut milk and wee fistfuls of oil. Some how, deep down inside I know that it’s not so healthy.

Tonight I decided to deconstruct the dish.  Instead of the shrimp I usually get in the dish, I decided to sub in tofu.  First though, in order to not be stuck with mushfu, I baked it.  I read that on the interweb somewhere.  Thank you interweb, thank you, thank you.  I wrapped my tofu up in paper towels and let it dry out while I was at the gym, so when I got back, It was all ready for slicing and dicing.  I cubed it and put it in the toaster oven for about 5-6 minutes on each side.  Just enough to help it solidify, but not so much that it was toasted.

I knew I was going to have to use oil in the dish, but I wanted to minimize my usage, so with my tofu baked, I decided to take the same approach with the veggies.  I partially steamed my broccoli and snow peas so that they wouldn’t need quite as much oil to cook them through.

Meanwhile, while all this was happening I opened up a can of lite coconut milk.  It may be lite, but that stuff is decadent.  Then I added in a couple of spoonfuls of red curry paste, a little brown sugar and some basil.  I let that simmer in a sauce pan while I went to saute my tofu and veggies, which were all golden-y brown with only about a tsp. of vegetable oil.  Not bad if I do say so myself.

When it looked like my veggie-fu was cooked, and my curry sauce sufficiently simmered, I poured a quarter of my mix in with the veggies let that cook for a few seconds then served it on brown rice.

Hurrah for being creative with cookery.  The best part is that I froze the rest of the curry sauce in 1/4 cup increments, so that next time I want to make the dish I’m already half way done.

I’m doing slightly better with my resolutions today than I was yesterday.  I even got creative with my workout.  I had to, the gym was crazy.  I was fine when it came to cardio.  I ran, but when it was time to hit the weight room I was shocked.  There were lines for everything!  Never before in the history of life have so many people wanted to torture their bicep muscles into submission at the same exact moment.  I’m  not big on waiting around, at least not when I’m wearing spandex, so I headed home.  During my cooking downtime moments I used my free weights to get in a  fairly decent strength training session if i do say so myself.  Lunge, stir, curl, simmer, squat, chop, press.

Oh!  And thank you all for your music suggestions.  I’m going to hit up iTunes and take your musically wisdomful suggestions!
