Curtain Up

Thanks for all of your words of wisdom and advice for my upcoming musical solo.  I TRULY appreciate them.

To clarify, I’ve just been working with some piano vamping and the lyrics; I haven’t had any sheet music or melody lines to work with, so this process has been a bit intimidating for me–but, after hours and hours of singing (everywhere: my house, the subway, walking around New York), I seem to have gotten the swing of the song.  This is good, because we open tonight!

I have to say, I’m seriously impressed with the director, who adapted the piece, wrote all the music, cast and rehearsed the show in a couple of weeks.  I got my song two days ago, and one of the other actors got hers yesterday.  I’m actually kind of amazed at how well the show is turning out.  I think it’s pure adrenaline.

For a recently laid off gal, I’m certainly testing my time management skills.  I’m really enjoying this process, but looking forward to finally feeling a wee bit of that down time.  It’ll be short lived though; I recently took on yet another freelance project that starts up next week.

At least I still get to work in my sweatpants and workout mid-day.  There are definitely perks to self-employment–remind me of that come tax time.

I’m a St. Patrick’s Day failure; I didn’t get to partake in any of the debauchery NYC had to offer in honor of my wee Irish roots (my dad’s mother was Irish).  Perhaps I’ll share a beer with my dad this weekend to celebrate once my show is over.   In addition to green beer, I also had to skip out on my workout due to an early rehearsal, followed by meetings, and class.  Today I’m going to try to get an exercise DVD in before I head back to the theater.

I have to shows tonight!  Wish me luck!

Breakfast

I knew breakfast would be my only balanced meal of the day, so I filled up!
Honeydew melon, 2 slices of Ezekial cinnamon raisin bread with peanut butter and banana

Lunch

Lunch was a whirlwind of bagels and fruit roll-ups. We ate between scenes. I didn’t have time whip out my camera, but let’s just say all the carbs made me super sleepy!

Dinner

Exhausted, and hours of activity still ahead of me, for dinner I decided to hit up Pita Grill for a little treat.

Veggie burger with fontina cheese and salad fixings and way more onions that should be socially acceptable. I don’t think anyone wanted to do scene work with me at my improv class.

Best sweet potato fries I’ve ever had!

If I couldn’t have a green beer, a root beer was a decent substitute.

Lie to me baby

NEVER TRUST A SLEEPING KIM.

I hold this truth to be self evident, and yet, being Kim, it can be hard to not trust me.  Wednesday morning I could not get up, I was what one might call really-friggin’ tired.  So, I chalked it up to my rest day and went on with my life.

The problem is, this morning I was really-friggin’ tired too.  I have a general “rest day” rule, and that is: take what you need, but don’t take them consecutively.  I don’t like to take two days off from my fitness goals in a row because that can then start steam rolling into weeks and months with not a bead of sweat to be seen anywhere.

This morning, when my alarm went off at 4:30am, and I knew I needed to get up to get to the gym by 5am to get my run in and get cracking on work I started negotiating with myself.  Now, I am a terrible negotiator when I am awake, but boy am I shrewed when I’m sleeping.

All of a sudden I was saying things to myself, like:

“You don’t need to exercise today because you’re not going to eat.”

Uhh, what?  I’m not going to eat?  Have I met ME?!

That little gem was followed closely by, “You can just take today off from work so you can go to the gym later.”  And, “You can quit your improv class, and go to the gym tonight.”

I’m a wee bit dramatic aren’t I?  Quit my improv class, take off from work, NOT EAT TODAY!

Needless to say, I slept in, today is also a “rest day.”

Here’s the food rundown from yesterday:

Breakfast

Egg whites, salsa, avocado, whole grain toast

Lunch

Whole wheat sourdough with grilled turkey breast, arugala, mustard

Dinner

Steak fajitas

One of the reasons I was so tired this morning was because some friends and I went out last night to celebrate my friend Amanda’s recent nuptials.  She and her awesometastic husband Tim got married last Friday.  I wrote about her for my new job.

All the internet’s a stage

Has anyone else upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7?  Has it created any issues with your computer?

Before we broke up, Achilles bought me Windows 7, it was very nice of him, but the upgrade has never ceased wreaking havoc with my computer–and ever since it’s a crap shoot as to whether or not it will load my pictures, turn off, play music, or any other number of vital functions.  It kind of sucks.  I have a friend who is computer genius, I’m plotting for him to come take a look at it next weekend.  I have a relatively new computer, and this is driving me nuts–having said that, that’s why there was no blog for Wednesday/Thursday, my computer was being temperamental.

Last night I did something I really needed to do, I took an improv class.  I have two friends, one a stand-up, one an event producer/actress, who have offered me spots performing stand-up in their shows recently.  So far I’ve said no, and let me tell you, that is very unlike me.  I just don’t say “no”, I’m of the school of “just say yes to life, and figure it out later.”  I guess I’ve felt a little out of the comedy scene for a while now, it’s time to dust off my mad-funny skills.  So, I plunked down some cash and dedicated the next two months worth of Thursdays to a new improv class.

It felt so good.

I was rusty, but it was good to get my brain working in that way again.  It’s part of my newly written 5-year plan to get back on stage in both a group setting (i.e. sketch, improv), and solo with a stand-up routine.  The plan is written, now it’s time to get started.  I’m glad I took the leap…I really needed it.

Coincidence, both the instructor and one of my fellow students went to my college.  None of us were the same year, but it’s very rare that I meet fellow Emersonians, so that was exciting.

Breakfast Wednesday

I met up with Anna (a reader turned regular lunch time companion) for lunch at a diner with surprisingly edible food.

2 eggs over-hard, 2 slices turkey bacon, and whole grain toast
Chocolate milk

Passion fruit coconut water

Kiwi fruit

Salad with lettuce, cucumber, carrot, beets, grilled chicken, chickpeas, and oil & vinegar
