October Resolutions

I start off every month doing two things. The first is saying to myself, “Holy crappola, how is it January/February/March/April/May/June/July/August/Septemeber/October/November/December already?” Then I read my detailed Astrologyzone.com horoscope. Seeing as how I’m a Capricorn it always says pretty much the same thing: Dear Capricorn, you’re going to work, work, workidy-work this month. Sometimes being the work horse (or goat) of the zodiac isn’t particularly exciting, but at least for the last year it has been relatively true.

September was the first real break in crazy stress I’ve had in a long time, and now that I’m back from my well-needed vacation it’s time to get back to my Capricorn ways, at least for the time being. I’m in the homestretch of book stuff now. I’m now in the revising stage, which is a whole new level of “Wow, this is hard, why did I decide to do this” but I can see the finish line in sight. So, as you may be expecting my first resolution for October is:

  1. Finish book revisions. You have no idea how much I can’t wait to have a finished manuscript! I’m incredibly lucky to have this opportunity, and although I’ve been super-duper secretive about what my memoir is about, I really hope that the final product will be something that is both an enjoyable read and will help people come to terms with their own personal hardships.

But, that’s boring, and even Capricorns can’t be all work and no play, so the here are some of my other goals for this month:

  1. Rock my Jessica Rabbit Halloween costume. The skin tight sequined dress is in my possession, and it is probably the sexiest I’ve ever dared to be on Halloween. Please note that I once rocked a ‘Conservatively Dressed Hooters Waitress’ costume. Since the first phase of book writing meant a few too many pints of ice cream and way less exercise than I’m used to, I’m going to aim to up my gym time. Well, I’ve already upped my gym time, but now that I’m back to days of sitting at a computer, I aim to maintain my gym time uppage.
  2. Techno Timeout. One of the best things about my vacation earlier this month (other than the eye pus, which was super exciting) was how free I felt from my technological bindings. The smartphones, e-mail, and social media sites that are meant to make our lives easier and connect us all can sometimes feel, at least to me, like chains I just can’t escape. I’ve decided to make Sundays in October digital detox days, meaning no phone, no email, no scouring Google Reader for updates of my favorite blogs. Book reading, cooking, conversation and cuddling—that’s what I’m prescribing for this month.
  3. Leave nice reviews. I realized recently that I only tend to leave reviews on sites like Amazon or Yelp when I have experienced bad service. How unfair is that to the companies that provide me with great service on a daily basis? This month is about accentuating the positive—just not on my digital detox day.
  4. Dress like a grown up. I’m going to let you in on a little secret: I spend most of my days in yoga pants and tank tops. Working from home has a somewhat stunting effect on ones ability to dress themselves. BUT I actually feel better about myself, and am more productive when I get dressed in real clothes and even do inconsequential things like brush my hair and put on makeup.

Work. Dress up. Power off. Say nice things. Get pretty. That’s what’s in store for me this month. What are you resolving for October?

Dear Internet: I’m Back

The good news: I finally got my hands on a new computer. About 45-seconds after I pressed “publish” on my last blog my computer did its last little freak out of the technologically living world (deleting everything on my iPhone that had the misfortune of being plugged in at the time) and is now resting comfortably on a shelf at my parents’ house until I can figure out what to do with it.

The bad news: I’m really behind on work, emails, and all things technologically related…in other words: life in general. The next few days are going to be a mad dash to make up assignments and kiss some editorial patootie so that I can keep myself employed. How were people able to passive-aggressively communicate with others before the advent of the Internet? Oh right, they actually did communicate in real life. How quant. The few days that I was computerless and phoneless were super stressful, but also strangely rejuvenating. While I wasn’t being hysterical, it was actually quite soothing to be completely unplugged.

I think I’m going to add one more resolution to my May list:

Digital detox one day a week. This is going to be hard, but I’m going to take one day a week off from technology and experience life as it is, not as it is on the Internet.

In the meantime I’m happy to be back in the land of the tech-capable. I’m also glad to be back in Brooklyn. I spent the last three days visiting my family and while I’m always nostalgic for home, a few days away always makes coming back to the daily grind of my real life feel fresh and exciting.

The Internet withdrawal left me confused and disheveled, and only capable of communicating with Ray-Ray…

Ray-Ray is my parents’ cat. He was a rescue kitty and came with the name, but I still like to make fun of my parents for having some sort of obsession with the name Rae/Ray. I’m thinking we should start naming all new additions to the family [First name] Rae

Breakfast

Whole wheat English muffin with peanut butter
Banana

Lunch

Ham with mustard on a roll

Dinner

Black beans and brown rice with turnip greens

Digital Detox

I took an impromptu digital detox yesterday.  Lately I’ve been craving some serious technology free time, so last night, instead of writing, texting, emailing, and doing all the other activities that usually fill my down time I just read a book.  It felt good.

I have to say I am very proud of myself.  Yesterday I started the day (EARLY) by hitting up Brooklyn Bridge Bootcamp, and slow as my running behind could carry me, I ran the whole thing twice.  Usually during this class I do a little run/walk action, but I was determined to run it.  There was one point that I was so slow that the teacher asked if I had walked it, but uhh, no, that’s just my feeble up-hill pace.  I was very proud of myself.

Speaking of running: Phil and anyone else out there interested in starting to run, or even improving your running skills, I want to provide you with a link to the program I’m doing.  The program starts from walking and has a curriculum all the way up to marathon training.  You can check it out at CoachShelly.com.

The rest of my Friday was spent with one of my most favorite people on the planet, Pink of Perfection.  Then I went to a reading for a new play.  It was good to get my feet back in the acting world.

When I got home I decided to try and recreate the tasty chicken kabobs they sell on the streets all over–and I was pretty successful.  There’s something in the spices they use that just makes me salivate, so when I got home I cut up some chicken thighs and created a dry rub of cumin, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper.  Really good.

Here’s a recap of the last couple of days.  If you’re American, happy Independence Day weekend!

And to my Best Friend, who I am not entirely sure reads this, HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHELLE!  I’m very glad you were born, you rock my world!

Happy Birthday Chelle!

Okay, here’s the food:

Thursday Breakfast

1/2 cup egg whites, salsa, 1/2 avocado

Lunch

Salad with arugala, tomato, cucumber, beets, tuna, oil & vinegar

Snack

1/2 cantelope

Dinner

Plain Greek Yogurt with trail mix

Friday Breakfast

I usually don’t eat before AM workouts, but the Brooklyn Bridge Bootcamp class is seriously hard and when I’ve taken it without food in my system I get really sick.  Smoothies seem to sit okay in my tummy pre activity, so I started my day with a milkshake, err, smoothie.

Almond milk, banana, 1 Tbsp Peanut Butter, Chocolate whey protein

Lunch

Post class I stopped at the farmers market and got some fresh tomatoes and fresh strawberries.  The taste of fresh strawberries cannot compare to the stuff you buy in the grocery store.  Simply amazing.

1/2 cup egg whites with salsa, 1/2 avocado, tomato, strawberries

Dinner

Chicken kabobs (2 chicken thighs), roasted zucchini, barley with mushrooms

Valentine’s Day Wicking

T-15hours till take off.  This will probably be my last post this week.  I leave tomorrow for my not-so-secret Valentine’s getaway!  I’m taking this as an opportunity to completely unplug. There is very rarely a time that I am not tethered to a computer or my crackberry; this weekend, except for a few calls to the folks, I am going completely technology free.

This must be how people lived back in the day…back in the 80s!

For Valentine’s Day I bought myself a present, or at least that’s what I’m using to justify my purchase.

Can we all agree right here and now that Lululemon has the cutest fitness gear on earth at ridiculously high prices?  Yes.  Good.  Well, I only have so much will power (that’s not true, I have no willpower at all, never have) and the bright lights and shiny new gear was too much for me to resist today.

I justified my trip inside the pearly gates of Lululemon because I’m running a race in 5-weeks and from what I’ve heard from past year participants, it’s a friggin cold race.  I need outdoor running gear!  So I bought just about the coolest running jacket known to man.

There’s a flap to pull your ponytail through, thumb holes if your hands are cold, cuffs on the sleeves to hold ID and money, a zipper pouch on the back for keys or a snack, and super wicking material and ventilation in all the right places.  Did I mention it’s PINK!

Yeah, it’s awesome.

Then, because that wasn’t enough, I bought new running pants, that have pink stripes.  I only wear capris when I work out because I never work out outside, so I needed a pair of full length leggings.

I’m having a bit of buyers remorse, but not enough to return it.  Perhaps enough to nix dinners out and drinks with friends for a couple of weeks though.

I took some pictures:

I realized that the obligatory draped shot didn't do them justice

'Member that New Years Resolution to take more pictures of me?

I love the pink butt stripes!

Okay, enough about my stupidly expensive exercise clothing addiction.  Now it’s time for my food addiction.  Breakfast was an adventure of sorts, a piecemeal challenge to make a healthy breakfast from convenience foods.

Breakfast

A few days ago I grabbed a couple of single serve nutbutter packets at Whole Foods for just such emergencies. I stopped at a deli to grab a banana and oatmeal, and Starbucks for a soy latte.

Yum, that’ll do.

Best warning ever!

Lunch

Left over brown rice with black beans and avocado

Dinner

This dinner concoction started out as a way to use up left over food before the trip, but it was really good.  I might make it a staple.  I added a bit of hot sauce post picture, c’est magnifique!

Avocado, grilled tomatoes, egg, veggie burger

I’ll be back with a full vacation recap on Tuesday.  While I’m gone feel free to entire the Kim Challenge Anniversary giveaway, two DVDs for the price of none!
