How about a little known Kim fact:
A few years ago I was mugged. Well, not entirely, the would-be mugger didn’t get my stuff, but I did get pretty banged up. It was totally a crime of opportunity; I was directly in front of my apartment, about to key in, when a guy on a bike grabbed my bag. Because I didn’t know what was going on, he didn’t say anything, I held on to my bag and end up being dragged face first down the block (which slopes downward so there was a bit of momentum).
While freezing and not just handing over my bag was the wrong thing to do in such a situation, I did do one thing right…I screamed. And screamed. And screamed. And screamed. I screamed until people came out of their houses and the guy on the bike let go of me.
I’m not sure what has taken me so long, but I got the itchy feeling a few weeks ago that it was high time for me to learn a thing or two about self-defense. Tonight was my very first self-defense class and I have to say these are skills that are so important to know. I definitely recommend that all women (and men) learn the appropriate way to handle personal attacks. While much of the class was spent focusing escaping certain physical situations, there was a big emphasis on being aware of your physical surroundings, but also on listening to your instincts. Just like most things in life: if something feels wrong, it probably is.
In was a super enlightening night, I hope I never have to use this knew found knowledge but I’m glad I have it.
Have you ever taken any form of self-defense? Have you ever had to use it?
