Well consider me humbled.

For the last few months I’ve been leaving running class feeling like a rock star, so much so that the instructors pretty much ordered me to move up to a new level last week.  This week was my first week as an “intermediate” level runner.

Here’s the difference between intermediate and my prior level as basic-intermediate:

  • In my last class we ran 1.5 miles.  Tonight I ran 5 miles.
  • The last class was aiming at an 11-minute mile.  My five miles tonight were all at a 9-minute mile pace.
  • Basic-Intermediate: no hills.  Intermediate: 4-hills
  • As basic-intermediate level runner I hardly broke a sweat.  By the end of my first “intermediate” run I wanted throw up my lungs.

Well, they were nice while they lasted but it looks like my rock star days are over.  I know that there are many people that run much longer runs at much faster paces–but this was definitely a personal record for me in both time and distance and I am very proud of myself if not considering spending the rest of the week in the fetal position.
